John Walter and Marian McPartland

Filmmaker John Walter visits to talk about his new film, Theater of War. In it, he examines Bertolt Brecht’s motives and politics through the lens of a Public Theater/NY Shakespeare Festival production of Mother Courage in Central Park during summer 2006. The production was adapted by Tony Kushner’s and starred Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline.'

Later, jazz (and radio!) legend Marian McPartland returns to the program to talk about a special piece she composed to commemorate environmentalist Rachel Carson.

A late comment regarding your Jan. 12 show with Bruce Bennett. About the Pioneer Theater: when I went by there 2-3 weeks ago, I discovered it had been closed since early November. From the look of things, the same goes for the Two Boots video store around the corner, though they were still dealing in DVDs near the entrance of Two Boots Pizza, which thankfully remains open and where one can still buy a Tony Clifton. And in case you missed the news, Love Saves the Day, at 7th St. & 2nd Ave., gave up the ghost just yesterday.

In the end it will be nothing but McDonald's, JPMorgan Chase and Wal-Mart as far as the eye can see.
