After assisting David O. Selznick on GONE WITH THE WIND, producer Val Lewton accepted a job at RKO running his own production unit. His first film there, CAT PEOPLE, became one of the sleeper hits of 1942 and is today recognized as one of the true classics of the horror genre. Over the next decade, the Lewton unit would create a string of subtle, elegant films, low perhaps in budget but always high in craft and intelligence. Film critic, scholar and Film Society's Associate Director of Programming Kent Jones has now made a perceptive, touching tribute to one of American cinema's most innovative producers. Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows takes us through the whole range of Lewton's work, detailing his close working relationships with directors such as Jacques Tourneur, Robert Wise and Mark Robson as well as the evolution of the major themes and motifs found in the films. Of special interest is Jones' discussion of Lewton's non-horror work, such as the early juvenile delinquency drama YOUTH RUNS WILD, a provocative suggestion of the directions Lewton's work might have explored if his career had not been so tragically brief.

Kent Jones will be onstage to discuss his film after the screening, and to introduce a screening of what for many is Lewton's masterpiece, Jacques Tourneur's I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE.

Tickets to Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows are $11 for Film Society members; $15 for the public, and include a complimentary ticket for I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE.

Jazz pianist supreme Bill Charlap visits the Speakeasy to talk about his music. Charlap's new CD, On May 22, Blue Note Records will release Charlap's first live recording date, Bill Charlap Trio-Live at The Village Vanguard, a nine-song snapshot of the New York-born and -based pianist who supplies a rigor-meets-romance musical sensibility. The date features tunes from such renowned jazz composers as Gerry Mulligan and Jim Hall and music from the Great American Songbook. The live recording is produced by Joel Moss, who also recorded and mixed the album.

Charlap also begins an engagement with his trio of himself, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington, at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola on May 22 running through June 3. Don't miss this dynamic trio!

Rediscovered Art Night!
The evening starts out with Dori Hadar, private investigator, DJ and record collector. Mr. Hadar discovered a trove of hand-rendered album covers with cardboard records inside, along with homemade cardboard 45's and 8-tracks, all by someone identified as "Mingering Mike." A book of these unusual artworks was recently published - Mingering Mike: The Amazing Career of an Imaginary Soul Superstar - and tonight Dori Hadar and Mingering Mike himself visit the program.

After that, NYU assistant Professor of Fine Arts Dennis Geronimus champions the art of Piero di Cosimo. His new book, Piero di Cosimo, Visions Beautiful and Strange, challenges much of the (scarce) scholarship on this artist.
